Tabletop exercises are an effective way to train decision-makers. Auditors expect training materials, completion records and exercise reports. Training should be refreshed after major changes to systems, tools or the threat landscape.\n\n**Common gaps.** Responder training is often ad hoc and depends on a few experienced people. Leadership and communications staff are frequently not trained at all. Lessons from exercises are rarely fed back into training content.","a. Provide incident response training to system users consistent with assigned roles and responsibilities:\n 1. Within [Assignment: organization-defined time period] of assuming an incident response role or responsibility or acquiring system access;\n 2. When required by system changes; and\n 3. [Assignment: organization-defined frequency] thereafter; and\n b. Review and update incident response training content [Assignment: organization-defined frequency] and following [Assignment: organization-defined events].\nDiscussion: Incident response training is associated with the assigned roles and responsibilities of organizational personnel to ensure that the appropriate content and level of detail are included in such training. For example, users may only need to know who to call or how to recognize an incident; system administrators may require additional training on how to handle incidents; and incident responders may receive more specific training on forensics, data collection techniques, reporting, system recovery, and system restoration. Incident response training includes user training in identifying and reporting suspicious activities from external and internal sources. Incident response training for users may be provided as part of [AT-2](#at-2) or [AT-3](#at-3) . Events that may precipitate an update to incident response training content include, but are not limited to, incident response plan testing or response to an actual incident (lessons learned), assessment or audit findings, or changes in applicable laws, executive orders, directives, regulations, policies, standards, and guidelines.","From NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5, a work of the US government in the public domain.","https:\u002F\u002Fcsrc.nist.gov\u002Fpubs\u002Fsp\u002F800\u002F53\u002Fr5\u002Fupd1\u002Ffinal","Open SP 800-53 at NIST",null,"2026-10-18T15:18:43.664+00:00",{"total":9,"list":19},[20,24,28,32,36],{"slug":21,"title":22,"published_at":23},"ransomware-negotiator-arrested-for-extortion-insider-threat-within-cybersecurity-industry","Ransomware Negotiator Arrested for Extortion: Insider Threat Within Cybersecurity Industry","2026-10-12T22:20:50.499+00:00",{"slug":25,"title":26,"published_at":27},"social-engineering-attack-on-levi-strauss-highlights-human-vulnerability","Social Engineering Attack on Levi Strauss Highlights Human Vulnerability","2026-08-07T16:20:17.194+00:00",{"slug":29,"title":30,"published_at":31},"ai-powered-fraud-tools-supercharge-organized-crime-at-global-scale","AI-Powered Fraud Tools Supercharge Organized Crime at Global Scale","2026-08-05T22:21:06.475+00:00",{"slug":33,"title":34,"published_at":35},"social-engineering-shifts-to-microsoft-teams-as-phishing-platforms-decline","Social Engineering Shifts to Microsoft Teams as Phishing Platforms Decline","2026-07-23T16:20:57.511+00:00",{"slug":37,"title":38,"published_at":39},"ransomware-negotiator-turns-insider-threat-for-profit","Ransomware Negotiator Turns Insider Threat for Profit","2026-04-22T06:09:34.682+00:00",[41,46,51,55,60],{"slug":42,"name":43,"problem":44,"stories":45},"security-awareness-training","Security awareness training and phishing simulation","People recognise and report attacks instead of falling for them.",3,{"slug":47,"name":48,"problem":49,"stories":50},"email-security","Email security","Phishing, malware and invoice fraud are filtered out before they reach inboxes.",2,{"slug":52,"name":53,"problem":54,"stories":50},"phishing-resistant-mfa","Phishing-resistant MFA","A stolen password, or a user who taps Approve on a push prompt, is no longer enough to log in.",{"slug":56,"name":57,"problem":58,"stories":59},"endpoint-detection-response","Endpoint detection and response (EDR and XDR)","Malware and hands-on-keyboard attackers on laptops and servers get spotted and stopped.",1,{"slug":61,"name":62,"problem":63,"stories":59},"identity-threat-detection","Identity threat detection and response (ITDR)","Attackers who log in with real, stolen credentials get noticed.",[65,70,75,80,84,89,93,97],{"family":66,"item":67,"code":68,"title":68,"together":69},"itil","overview","ITIL",4,{"family":71,"item":72,"code":73,"title":74,"together":69},"gdpr","32","Article 32","Security of processing",{"family":76,"item":77,"code":78,"title":79,"together":45},"cis","17","Control 17","Incident Response Management",{"family":76,"item":81,"code":82,"title":83,"together":45},"14","Control 14","Security Awareness and Skills Training",{"family":85,"item":86,"code":87,"title":88,"together":45},"nist-sp","800-50","SP 800-50","SP 800-50 Rev. 1: Building a Cybersecurity and Privacy Learning Program",{"family":5,"item":90,"code":91,"title":92,"together":45},"at-2","AT-2","Literacy Training and Awareness",{"family":5,"item":94,"code":95,"title":96,"together":50},"ac-2","AC-2","Account Management",{"family":76,"item":98,"code":99,"title":100,"together":50},"6","Control 6","Access Control Management"]
