Microsoft: Some Dell PCs shut down after recent Windows updates By Sergiu Gatlan July 15, 2026 04:26 AM 0 Microsoft is blocking this month's Windows 11 security updates on some Dell devices because they are causing shutdowns and performance issues. This known issue affects only Dell systems after installing the KB5101650 cumulative update released this Tuesday for Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 devices. "After installing the June 23, 2026, Windows preview update (KB5095093), a limited number of Dell devices might display a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager next to the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver," Microsoft said. "These devices can potentially experience unexpected shutdowns, poor performance, increased heat, and battery drain." However, the root cause is a change introduced in the June 2026 KB5095093 preview cumulative update that causes a conflict between the new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface and the Intel Innovation Platform Framework (IPF) Processor Participant driver. "This issue was reported by Dell during testing and identified as an incompatibility between the Intel driver and the new Windows USB-C Connection Manager interface introduced in the June 23, 2026, Windows preview update (KB5095093)." Intel IPF Processor Participant driver (Intel) The Intel IPF Processor Participant driver is a core system-level hardware driver that manages system power and thermals by adjusting the processor's cooling, power consumption, and thermal performance. Because of this incompatibility issue, Windows will display a yellow exclamation mark next to the Processor Participant driver in Device Manager. At the moment, Microsoft is working with Dell to address this issue and, until a fix is available, will stop pushing the KB5101650 update to affected systems. "Microsoft plans to release a resolution for affected devices in the coming days," the company added in an update to the Windows release health dashboard. In recent weeks, Microsoft also addressed a known issue that caused the Copilot Chat or Copilot buttons to disappear from Classic Outlook for Windows users with the Copilot Chat (Basic) license.
