Vulnerability Management

Breach and attack simulation

You only find out whether your security tools stop an attack when a real attacker tries.

What it is

Software that safely runs real attacker techniques inside your own environment, on a schedule, and reports which ones your controls blocked, detected or missed. Automated penetration testing goes a step further and chains weaknesses together the way an attacker would. The category is now often sold as exposure validation.

How to value it

Security tools drift. A policy changes, an agent stops reporting, a detection rule breaks after an update, and nobody notices until an incident. Continuous testing catches that drift, and it shows which of thousands of open vulnerabilities an attacker could actually use, so teams fix what matters first. It also produces evidence that controls work, which boards, auditors and regulators increasingly ask for, especially under DORA.

Questions to ask a vendor

  1. 1How do you make sure tests are safe to run in production, and what can go wrong?
  2. 2How quickly are techniques from current attack campaigns added to the test library?
  3. 3Does it tell us how to fix each gap, for example the detection rule or setting to change?
  4. 4Can results be mapped to MITRE ATT&CK and used as evidence for auditors and regulators?

For your risk register

Risk
Security controls that silently fail, or gaps attackers can use without being stopped or seen.
Control
Continuous breach and attack simulation against endpoint, email, network and detection controls, with tracked remediation.
Owner
Security architecture or SOC lead.
Measure
Share of simulated techniques blocked or detected, tracked over time.

A starting point: set the owner and measure to fit your organisation.

Products that provide it

Listed alphabetically by vendor. A listing is not a recommendation: use the questions above to compare them, or tick up to 3 to see them side by side.

AttackIQ

AttackIQ Enterprise

Continuous, automated adversary emulation across the environment, with full control over scenarios and schedules.

Cymulate

Cymulate Exposure Validation

Tests security controls, cloud defences and response playbooks against real threats to show which exposures are exploitable.

Horizon3.ai

NodeZero

Continuous autonomous penetration testing of internal and external networks, cloud, Kubernetes and web applications, showing which attack paths work and checking that fixes hold.

Pentera

Pentera Platform

Runs automated, safe attacks in production to validate exploitable attack paths, prioritise proven risk and confirm fixes. Modules cover internal networks, the external attack surface and cloud.

Picus Autonomous Penetration Testing

Automated penetration tests that prove which weaknesses are actually exploitable, so fixing can focus on real risk.

Picus Breach and Attack Simulation

Continuously tests live defences against current threats, shows what controls block, detect, log and miss, and provides ready-to-apply fixes.

SafeBreach

SafeBreach Propagate

Automated penetration testing that emulates lateral movement, privilege escalation and credential harvesting to show how far a breach could spread.

SafeBreach

SafeBreach Validate

Breach and attack simulation with a large library of real attack methods, testing how well controls work across the whole attack chain.

How we list vendors

  • A product is listed because it provides the control. Nobody pays to be listed, and on story pages the examples rotate, so no vendor is always first.
  • Vendor pages show both the vendor's own research and the incidents involving its products, from our own coverage. We do not leave either out.
  • Our summaries are written by us, based on the vendors' own pages. Text in quotation marks or marked "in their own words" is the vendor's own, quoted from its website.
  • Logos, product names and quoted text belong to the vendors and are shown to identify them.
  • Something wrong? Use "Suggest a correction" on the vendor's page. A product we should look at? Email support@threatnoir.com.
