Logging & Monitoring

SOC automation and AI analysts

Alerts arrive faster than the team can investigate them, so real attacks wait in the queue or are closed unread.

What it is

Software that does the first investigation of every alert: it gathers context from your security tools, decides whether the alert is real, and either closes it with an explanation or hands a ready case to a person. Newer products use AI agents for the investigation, while automation platforms (SOAR) run the response steps, such as isolating a laptop or resetting an account.

How to value it

Most security teams cannot look at every alert, so alerts get tuned away or left to age, and attackers live in that gap. Automating the first investigation means every alert is looked at within minutes, analysts spend their time on confirmed incidents, and response is fast enough to matter. For a small team it can decide whether nights and weekends are covered at all. Judge it on accuracy and transparency, not speed alone: every verdict should show the evidence behind it.

Questions to ask a vendor

  1. 1What share of our alerts can it investigate end to end, and how often were its verdicts wrong in a trial on our own data?
  2. 2Does every verdict show the evidence and steps behind it, so an analyst can check it?
  3. 3Which actions can it take on its own, and how are they limited and approved?
  4. 4Where is our data processed, is it used to train models, and how is the AI's access to our tools controlled and logged?

For your risk register

Risk
Real attacks missed or handled too late because alert volume exceeds analyst capacity.
Control
Automated triage and investigation of every alert, with human review of escalations and of automated response actions.
Owner
SOC lead.
Measure
Share of alerts investigated and median time from alert to verdict.

A starting point: set the owner and measure to fit your organisation.

How we list vendors

  • A product is listed because it provides the control. Nobody pays to be listed, and on story pages the examples rotate, so no vendor is always first.
  • Vendor pages show both the vendor's own research and the incidents involving its products, from our own coverage. We do not leave either out.
  • Our summaries are written by us, based on the vendors' own pages. Text in quotation marks or marked "in their own words" is the vendor's own, quoted from its website.
  • Logos, product names and quoted text belong to the vendors and are shown to identify them.
  • Something wrong? Use "Suggest a correction" on the vendor's page. A product we should look at? Email support@threatnoir.com.
