Drupal Critical RCE Flaw Exploitable Without Login via Contributed Modules

A critical Remote Code Execution vulnerability in Drupal's Field UI module exposes sites to full compromise, with at least one exploit path requiring no authentication whatsoever. The risk is amplified by the widespread use of contributed (third-party) modules, which can serve as an attack bridge even when core Drupal alone is not directly exploitable. This highlights a dangerous assumption many administrators make: that keeping core software patched is sufficient when third-party extensions introduce additional attack surfaces. Organizations running Drupal without a rigorous module inventory and patch cadence are particularly exposed, as unauthenticated RCE flaws are among the most severe vulnerability classes and are rapidly weaponized by threat actors.

Tactical Insight

Immediate actions

  • Apply Drupal's official security patch or upgrade to the patched version immediately across all Drupal instances.
  • Conduct an emergency audit of all installed contributed modules to identify those that create exploit paths for this vulnerability.
  • Temporarily disable non-essential contributed modules until patches are confirmed applied and validated.

Long-term improvements

  • Maintain a complete, up-to-date inventory of all CMS core versions and contributed/third-party modules in use across the organization.
  • Implement a formal patch management policy with defined SLAs for critical vulnerabilities (e.g., patch within 24–48 hours for CVSS 9.0+).
  • Enforce a vetting and approval process for contributed modules before deployment to reduce supply-chain-style risk.

Detection measures

  • Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules tuned to detect and block RCE exploitation attempts targeting Drupal Field UI.
  • Enable detailed access and error logging on all Drupal instances and route logs to a centralized SIEM for anomaly detection.
  • Run continuous automated vulnerability scanning against all internet-facing Drupal assets to detect unpatched instances in real time.
